First of all, I would like to state how thankful I am to be appointed the new Associate Artistic Director for Y-Not Theatre. As a career actor and scholar, I had not planned to make the move into Arts Administration for at least another few years. However, the last year has shown me the benefit of staying in one place long enough to make a difference. Because of this, I have decided to stay in Gainesville and help Y-Not Theatre become a valuable and exciting part of the Arts community of Gainesville, Florida.
As we begin to recover from the pandemic, Paul and I have been reaching out to local figures in the community. We’ve been asking a lot of questions about how Y-Not Theatre can best serve the artistic needs of North Central Florida moving forward. One of the most helpful suggestions we received, was that we not focus on competing with other theatres in the area—that we look for ways to fill in an existing gap in the local arts community. Perhaps we have found a way to do just that.
Until recently, the desire for Y-Not to have a physical home has been placed on the back burner. In fact it is unlikely that we could have survived the last 16 months if we had to pay for a space. It most likely would have wiped us out financially. Now, however, in the wake of what seems like a new era for Gainesville theatre, we have begun the search for a home, or what we would like to refer to as a shared artistic space.
We’ve been working with various theatre professionals and financial advisors, and we believe we have a space in mind. With your help, we will be a brick and mortar theatre within the coming year. This will allow us to produce quality theatre, employ a theatre company and offer educational opportunities to local artists. It will also help us explore ways that we can help support other local theatres that may need a place to work, post-pandemic.
In the meantime, we have nearly completed planning out 2021-22 season, which will be announced within the next few weeks. We can’t wait to show you what’s ahead!
Some ask, “Why?” We say, “Y-Not!”
